NHC First Round at Wild East

The NYC Regional NHC First Round judging will take place at Wild East Brewing Co. on March 20 and March 21. Please sign up at their website https://www.brewingcompetition.com/ to judge or steward.

Congratulations to the Winners of HAXIV!!

On Friday and Saturday, February 7th and February 8th, 2020, we held Homebrew Alley XIV, the New York City Homebrewers Guild’s annual AHA/BJCP Homebrew Competition.  We judged a total of 588 beers, ciders and meads, and we are excited to announce our results.  Many thanks to all of our judges, stewards, organizers and entrants, as well as our host, Wild East Brewing Co., and our sponsors including Descendant Cider, Randolph Beer, and many more! HAXIV – February 7 & 8!!

Hey all!! Just a reminder that we’ll be holding our fourteenth annual homebrew competition, Homebrew Alley, on February 7th and 8th, 2020, at Wild East Brewing Co. (623 Sackett St., Brooklyn, NY 11217). Come on out to judge or steward and come to the awards ceremony on Saturday at 7 P.M.! Judging will commence by 6:30 P.M. Friday and by 9 A.M. and 1 P.M. Saturday.

Winners will be announced upon completion of the competition at the brewery.  All entrants and friends thereof are welcome to attend the ceremony. The awards ceremony and celebration will be open to all friends and family of entrants, judges, stewards and organizers! We will announce all winners, including the Best of Show and two Brewer’s Choice winners, as well as our two additional awards, the Most Brewingest Brewer Award, and the Big Apple Award for the best cider, proudly presented by Descendant Cider Co.

Best of Show 1st Place: A Spike Flex fementor courtesy of Spike Brewing,

plus additional prizes courtesy of local breweries and bars, and others, as well as the coveted Best of Show title belt!

Most Brewingest Brewer Award: An award based on cumulative points for placing with multiple entries.  Points will be awarded for each entry you place in a category/subcategory–4 points for 1st, 3 points for 2nd, 2 points for 3rd and 1 point for Honorable Mention.  The brewer with the most overall points will be awarded the Most Brewingest Brewer Award, which will include a hand-crafted trophy, Gift Certificates to local homebrew shops, bars and breweries, plus additional prizes to be determined.

Big Apple Award:  Also returning this year, Descendant Cider Co. proudly presents the Big Apple Award for the best cider.  Descendant, in conjunction with a panel of Best of Show judges, will determine which cider entry prevails and receives the Big Apple Award trophy, along with winning some sweet juice from Descendant Cider and additional prizes to be determined.

Brewer’s Choice Awards:

There will be two Brewer’s Choice winners this year! One winner will be able to brew a batch of their winning recipe at Wild East Brewing Company. Additional prizes may be allocated at the discretion of the competition organizers.

This award is chosen and presented by the brewers at Wild East including Guild alum Brett Taylor, and the awardee will be invited to brew a full batch of their award winning beer at Wild East’s brand spankin’ new facility in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

The second Brewer’s Choice winner will be given the opportunity to brew their winning recipe in collaboration with Randolph Beer Williamsburg’s nano-brewery for entry into this year’s Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am Competition (subject to all AHA requirements).

Manhattan Homebrew Cup

Draft 55 will be holding the Manhattan Homebrew Cup for the second year in a row on September 8, 2018.  Details below:

The Manhattan Homebrew Cup 

Draught 55 is proud to announce we are hosting The Manhattan Homebrew Cup for the second year in a row. In September of 2017 The Manhattan Homebrew Cup was created to bring together the homebrewers and beer enthusiasts of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs in an effort to encourage creativity with friendly competition. The competition was a great success thanks all our judges and volunteers. We are happy to announce we have decided to host the competition again this coming Fall.

 

The winner of the 2018 Manhattan Homebrew Cup will have the honor of having their beer brewed by Five Boroughs Brewing Company. This means that the winner will have their beer available on tap in Draught 55 and in the Five Boroughs Brewery Taproom. An incredible achievement for any homebrewer.

 

Date: Saturday September 8th

Time: 9am – 7pm

Cost of entry is $10 (Limit of 250 entries in this competition)

Payment must be made online.

Two 12oz glass bottles per entry will be accepted.

BJCP 2015 Style Guidelines will be used for Judging.

REMINDERS: Homebrew Alley XII, Monthly Meeting, Ferm Fest

Hi all,

Just a quick reminder that we have Homebrew Alley XII coming up this weekend on February 9 and 10 at Fifth Hammer Brewing Co. with some great prizes offered by Bitter & Esters, Descendant CiderKeg & Lantern Brewing Company and many more!  Please come out and support us and our wonderful sponsors by attending the competition and the after party at Fifth Hammer on the evening of February 10!

Also coming up is our monthly meeting at the Burp Castle on February 20, 2018 at 7:30 P.M., where we’ll be asking Homebrew Alley winners to share and talk about their beers, processes and offer any other wisdom they can provide, so here’s to a good showing this weekend!

On February 24, 2018, we have the NYC Fermentation Festival coming up so sign up here if you’d like to join us and bring a beer to pour at the Guild table in the Brewnity section.  It should be a fun day and a great way to try some delicious food and beverages!  There’s also an interclub competition to have a beer distilled into whiskey by Arcane Distilling so let’s get some great beer pouring and take home the crown!

Homebrew Alley XI took place this weekend at Alewife, in Long Island City, NY.  Thanks to a great turnout of judges and stewards, things ran very smoothly and we were able to evaluate the 544 entries without issue.  Judging began on Friday, February 10th and continued on February 11th until every entry was judged. On Saturday evening our Best of Show panel sat down to judge the winning entries from each category.  On the panel were John Naegle, Andie Davies, Oskar Norlander and Charles Simchick.  They were joined by Tony Bellis of KCBC who chose the winning beer for the Brewer’s Choice Award.

Congratulations to our winners and thanks to all the judges, stewards, organizers and sponsors who made this event such a big success.

Homebrew Alley XI

The NYC Homebrewers Guild will hold its eleventh annual homebrew competition on February 10th and 11th, 2017, in one of New York’s best craft beer havens, Alewife Queens (5-14 51st Avenue Long Island City, NY 11101). This is an AHA/BJCP Sanctioned event. All entrants will receive score sheets and commentary prepared by judges recognized by the BJCP.

Winners will be announced upon completion of the competition on the second floor dining area of Alewife Queens. All entrants and friends thereof are welcome to attend the ceremony. We intend to judge first flights on Friday night, February 10th and complete Best of Show judging by 6pm on Saturday, making way for an Award Ceremony and Party at Alewife through the evening.  The party and celebration will be open to the public. It is at the award ceremony that we will announce all winners, including the Best of Show and Brewer’s Choice.

Prizes include:

Best of Show 1st Place, Best of Show 2nd Place, & Best of Show Third Place: Gift Certificates to local homebrew shops. Brewer’s Choice Award: Brew a 15 bbl batch of your winning recipe at Kings County Brewers Collective. Additional prizes may be allocated at the discretion of the competition organizers.

Kings County Brewers Collective

This award is chosen and presented by Tony, Pete and Zack of Kings County Brewers Collective and the awardee will be invited to brew 15bbls of their award winning beer at KCBC’s facility in Bushwick Brooklyn.

Eligibility: This competition is open to everyone. Entries must have been made at home. Those made in commercial establishments, including brew on premise establishments, are not eligible. Read the full competition rules before entering your beers to ensure that your entries are properly submitted. Entries can be mailed in or dropped off at a variety of locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Westchester and Long Island. Entries should be dropped off or shipped to arrive by Wednesday, February 1, 2017, or else they will not be entered in our contest. If you are shipping your entries do not use the United States Postal Service, USPS entries will not ship to this address – if you must ship your entries, use a private shipping service.  Please note that Alewife is not a drop-off or mail-in location and judges will not be allowed to bring entries on the day of the competition!
