The Manhattan Homebrew Cup

Draught 55 is proud to announce we are hosting The Manhattan Homebrew Cup for the second year in a row. In September of 2017 The Manhattan Homebrew Cup was created to bring together the homebrewers and beer enthusiasts of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs in an effort to encourage creativity with friendly competition. The competition was a great success thanks all our judges and volunteers. We are happy to announce we have decided to host the competition again this coming Fall.

The winner of the 2018 Manhattan Homebrew Cup will have the honor of having their beer brewed by Five Boroughs Brewing Company. This means that the winner will have their beer available on tap in Draught 55 and in the Five Boroughs Brewery Taproom. An incredible achievement for any homebrewer.

Date: Saturday September 8th

Time: 9am – 7pm

Cost of entry is $10 (Limit of 250 entries in this competition)

NYC Fermentation Festival – February 24, 2018

Jan 16, 2018   //   by nychg   //   Announcements, Event  //  No Comments

Hi all!

The NYC Fermentation Festival is back for it’s second go ’round this year!  It will be held at the Brooklyn Expo Center on Saturday February 24th from 10:30am to 4pm.

We’d like to start our 30th Anniversary year out strong so the Guild will have a booth at the festival and we hope everyone can brew and attend.  If you are interested in brewing/pouring or volunteering sign up here. Your admission is free if you bring beer or volunteer, no plus ones. You must sign up if you are participating.

The NYC Fermentation Festival Event Committee will provide tables, ice and cups.  The Guild will have a tap board and all necessary hookups.  It is up to you to bring beer and give us a strong showing!

Per John LaPolla at Bitter & Esters, who is the homebrew liaison for the festival:

We’re featuring a very cool contest this year. The club with the winning beer gets to have a beer turned into whisky by David at Arcane Distillery.  The voting will be done by the public. We’ll put a cup in front of each beer entered that they can put a ballot in like last year. Each club can choose 5 beers from what they are pouring at the fest to enter into the contest. Much thanks to David for providing this awesome prize.

  • All clubs can enter
  • The clubs pick/choose/vote/hat draw up to 5 homebrewers to represent the club.
  • People will vote for their favorite home brew, not their favorite club, this should help remove ballot stuffing.
  • The winning homebrew wins the the club brewing a beer for Arcane’s Lone Wolf program.
  • 5 gallons of homebrew must be brewed for Lone Wolf – but it’s entirely up to the club to figure out what they want to brew.
  • The winning brewer gets a bottle of whiskey and the club gets 2 more bottles to share. The rest will be sold at the Arcane/Interboro tap room.
Please contact me with any questions and make sure your members sign up asap. We need to know how much room we’ll need. If you participated last year you know what a blast it was, gonna be even better this year.

So, let’s get as many people signed up as we can and get some great beers to offer to the crowd.  Also, spread the word to friends, family and strangers to come on out to the Festival and enjoy!

NYCHG Club Barrel

Sep 25, 2017   //   by nychg   //   Announcements  //  No Comments

The Guild will soon be acquiring a 225 or 228 litre barrel from Red Hook Winery, which will be housed by our good friends at KCBC! We previously held a club Barrel Aged Beer competition, where we asked brewers to submit a beer they had aged on wood, or thought would be good aged on wood, with the winner having their recipe scaled up and put into a barrel of the type used to age their beer (or that they thought would work well for their beer), that the Guild would then obtain.  The winner of that competition was Justin Wilson with a Red Wine Barrel Aged Belgian Dark Strong Ale, which we now have 60 gallons of fermenting and being readied for transfer to our Guild barrel on November 4, 2017, at KCBC.

Brewers that brew for the barrel will receive ~80% of their contribution back once the beer has aged appropriately and we’ll reserve some to serve at an event and share with our friends at Red Hook Winery, who also love beer! We’re still looking for a couple eager brewers to sign up and make this beer ASAP, so if you have some time to brew this beer up soon (like, now!) please sign up and get going.  A sign up sheet with the recipe is located below.

Looking forward to seeing you at KCBC on transfer day and getting this project underway.  And start thinking about what we should put into the barrel next!
